About the Building and Construction Industry Medical Aid Fund (BCIMA)
With a history in South African healthcare spanning more than fifty years, BCIMA remains the gold standard and go-to scheme for employees in the building, construction and civil engineering sectors, serving businesses and covering employees.
BCIMA has always been entirely focused on finding effective and innovative healthcare solutions for employers and their employees in these industries and as a result understands the sector and its people better than any other medical scheme.
With BCIMA, members are not governed by network restrictions but are instead afforded freedom of choice in selecting healthcare service providers across the board, from private hospitals to traditional healers and homeopaths.
With our proud track-record, healthy reserves, and lower than average administration fees, BCIMA is widely acknowledged as a well run medical scheme offering affordable, flexible and easy-to-use product benefits and features.
BCIMA has done more than any other private medical scheme in South Africa to broaden access to healthcare and has made appreciable inroads in terms of extending highly flexible medical scheme protection to low-cost employees and their beneficiaries.
Built to last
-
BCIMA was specifically created with the needs of employers and employees in the building and construction industry in mind. We know and understand this industry better than anyone else. That is why we have been trusted with the task of providing healthcare cover to people just like you for more than five decades.
-
Despite the building industry’s financial challenges, the fund continues to grow as a result of the excellent value it offers.
-
The average BCIMA member is 27 years old, while the pensioner ratio is currently only 2,85%.
-
BCIMA maintains a solvency ratio of over 100% due to the members’ appropriate use of available benefits.
Head and shoulders above the rest

-
Generous benefits and below average annual contribution increases make the Building and Construction Medical Aid Fund (BCIMA), the scheme of choice for the building and construction industry.
-
This value-for-money fund is more affordable than the average medical scheme. While the Registrar of Medical Schemes granted BCIMA exemption in respect of the provision of Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs), the Fund continues to pay for PMB treatments in line with its annual limits.
-
BCIMA’s single rate contributions mean all registered dependants have access to cover. Membership numbers are retained for life and the fund can be joined for specific contract periods. Members have the freedom to choose any service provider as no network restrictions apply.
These are just a few aspects that set BCIMA apart:
-
We offer several one-of-a-kind benefits including a lifetime membership number and the ability to be covered only for the duration of a contract. Members are able to remain on the scheme at their own cost at the end of their contract.
-
With BCIMA only the main member pays a contribution while other registered family members are covered for free with contributions based on income.
-
We understand how the industry works, and can, therefore, provide cover that is tailored to meet the needs of employees who are paid hourly rates.
